Lancashire Aikikai - Grading Admin - Examiner Guidelines

1st Kyu Grading

The Grading Review Group (GRG) facilitates and upholds the grading process and standards within the Lancashire Aikikai. We work with all Instructors to standardise across the syllabus, especially, with Club Leaders who are preparing candidates for 1st Kyu and beyond to meet the necessary standards prior to grading and offer constructive feedback on areas for improvement.

Candidates from 2nd Kyu may be asked to give brief demonstrations during courses or other relevant sessions to showcase their abilities and readiness for advancement. It's of growing importance to attend both general and high grade courses so your progress can be noted. Studying video clips of techniques / kokyu (Password needed) by Mimuro Sensei and demonstrations. Visits to other LA clubs will all help you to gain differing perspectives to prepare you further.

Once an Aikidoka is approaching the 1st Kyu standard a grading panel will be assembled specifically for the candidates taking this grade.

Gradings will be programmed into general courses of Lancashire Aikikai, allowing fellow students to observe the established standards. The GRG will appoint the panel in advance to ensure proper organisation and to gather necessary information about each candidate.

Before the grading, the Club Leader should brief the panel on the following:

  • health issues
  • grading history

The panel will discuss and organise the grading process in advance, assigning specific tasks among themselves. It's advisable that one individual be responsible for calling techniques at any given time to minimise confusion.

After the Grading the panel will discuss whether you met the standard.

You will be told the outcome, after their discussions, at the end of the course.

The Candidate feedback sheet is usually handed out then as well.
